Music in Yoga Class: A Discussion

I’m participating in a panel discussion with local yoga teachers on the subject of music in yoga class. Hosted by the folks at Yoga=Union, we will explore the what and why of music in yoga class. As most of you know, despite recently being in a rock band, and being an on again, off again piano teacher with a long history in classical music, I don’t — I can’t — play music in the classes I teach. Come find out why, and come to learn about other the perspectives that in fact reflect the majority of yoga market! Register here for this Sunday event; I hope to see you then.

There are four principles for first learning yoga, and I devote one week a month to each principle: Week 1 is using the legs to support the body. Week 2 is establishing pelvic balance and health. Week 3 is understanding and using the shoulder and arms safely in the digital age. Week 4 is working with the whole body at once. In this class you will learn standing poses and other poses such as backbends, abdominal work and twists. Principles of correct forward folding is also learned. Inversions are not appropriate at this level. Register here.

Summer Forward Folds: a Workshop Master Class

Summer is the time to understand how forward folds help both the mind and the body. With the body sustaining high heats, the mind and emotions can also get heated. Forward folds balance this heat through stable, strong legs that create and hold space for a long, extended spine that allows the forehead to rest and the diaphragm to stay open. In this workshop you will learn:

  • How to straighten your legs and why it is important to do do

  • To identify and manage your own cravings, aggression, and depression as they manifest in forward folds

  • How to balance forward momentum and stillness

This workshop is appropriate for all but students totally new to yoga. Register here.

I teach this class in quarterly chunks, overlapping classes as we transition from one subject matter to the next. In Spring to early Summer, it's hip opening and arm balancing, leading to Summer and early Fall forward folding. We learn much of it through inversions, and in advanced standing and other intermediate to advanced poses. Register here.

Iyengar Level 2

This is a 60 minute class, and I teach all Level 1 poses, introduce most Level 2 poses, and build on the seasonal subject matter. It's an excellent class if you've been with me a while in Level 1 and want to be prepared for Level 2. It's also for Level 2 students looking for another detail-oriented weekly class -- and interested in building more baseline information for an integrated, subtle yoga practice. Register here.
